Patrick - I've used Guido as a last-minute ear training review before going to grad school, and liked it a lot. It was pretty easy to use. I'm not at the same school this year, and we don't have it here, so I can't give you any info on it. You might also want to investigate Practica Musica. There are several ear training packages out there. Stephanie "STEPHANIE W. WILSON" Patrick: I heard of Guido through my theory professor. I think that when the program comes up it says that the person that developed it was from the University of Delaware. I think that it cost me about $50 from the college bookstore. Don't know if that price was inflated though (many items at this bookstore are). Unfortunately I got this message on the morning of the day that I'm going out of town for a week. I'll be back here on th 27th. If you send me a reminder that day, I'll try to remember to look up what- ever I can and fill you in. It's a pretty easy-to-use package. It starts with the basic solfege syllables (these don't even require a MIDI interface, just a speaker), and goes into chords, inversions, progressions, and I think there's even a section on 12-tone. Since I don't play at the keyboard every day, I still use it frequently as a refresher (although I'm getting so rusty with what I did learn that I may even start the whole thing over again from the start!). It is academically oriented in that you can practice at a particular level until you pass, and then go on to the next level, but you are free to go to any level at any time. One of the things that I don't like is that it's copy-protected. You don't need a hardware key, but you can't even make a backup of any of the disks. This isn't usually a problem with other packages, but Guido is the only package that I had a physical disk problem with. (It eventually went away after a bit of futzing around, and nobody else in my class had any problems.) All in all, if I were seriously learning theory on my own, I'd be willing to spend at least $50 for this package. Good luck! Doug Brown, Firmware Engineer brown@iditarod.ctron.com I just got Practica Musica for my students (Mac). It seems vastly improved from the way it looked when it came out. The students also enjoy using it. Might this be a good choice for a personal program? David Froom - dfroom@oyster.smcm.edu
