About Brent Hugh

Brent Hugh is a pianist, composer, and teacher. He is Assistant Professor of Music at Missouri Western State College and an occasional freelance classical music reviewer and writer (often for Kansas City infoZine).

The Official Short Biography (updated 1/2001)

Brent Hugh lives with his wife, Jan, and four-year-old son, Jonathan, in Raytown, Missouri. Brent is Assistant Professor of Music at Missouri Western State College, where he is Coordinator of Piano Pedagogy. Brent is an active teacher, performer, and adjudicator in the Kansas City area. He is Director of the MWSC Piano Camp, which has just completed its second successful year.

The Wyoming Arts Council and the Utah Arts Council have selected Brent for inclusion in their Arts-in-Education Artist Rosters, and he has performed and given many musical presentations for school groups in those states.

Brent has studied with Lenora Ford Brown at the University of Utah, Gary Amano at Utah State University, and Ruth Ann Rich at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. He received a B.M. degree from Utah State University and both M.M. and D.M.A degrees from the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Brent's doctoral research was in the area of the development of music preference and its implications for music learning over the lifespan. Brent maintains a page, stemming from this research, of various ideas and suggestions for parents and music teachers.

Last year, Brent became the first classical pianist to release a CD on MP3.com. His CD, Fantastic Rhapsodies: The Gamelan-inspired Piano Music of Claude Debussy, spent several months on the MP3.com classical top ten list.
